About Therapy

Step 1: Telephone Consultation

If you are thinking about starting therapy, it can be overwhelming to know where to begin. In order to help with this, I offer a free 15 minute telephone consultation.

This will give me a chance to get a sense of what you are looking for, and to check I can offer what you need. It will also give you a chance to see if you think that I am the right fit for you, and to ask any questions you have about therapy or about my practice.

Step 2: Assessment

If you would like to go ahead, you can then book in for an assessment. Assessments typically last 60 minutes, which will give us time to discuss your difficulties and goals and to create an initial treatment plan. This will often be a therapy recommendation. Occasionally, I may feel you would be better suited to a different approach or service, in which case I will make detailed recommendations and referrals. And sometimes we may need a little longer to clarify the treatment plan, in which case I will recommend an extended assessment.

Step 3: Treatment

Treatment usually involves weekly sessions, typically lasting an hour (although in some cases 30 or 90 minute sessions may be appropriate). I will do my best to give you a sense of treatment length at assessment, although regular review sessions will allow us to determine whether this might need to be adjusted.

I may recommend that you also see a dietitan or psychiatrist. If so, I am happy to make recommendations and referrals.

 FAQs

  • Appointments are available during day time hours, Monday to Thursday. Timings will depend on availability, but I will always endeavour to find a time that works for you.

  • I offer therapy to adults, aged 18 and over.

  • I am afraid I don’t offer evening appointments. However, therapy appointments are medical appointments and most employers grant time off work to attend them, although you may be expected to make up the time spent at appointments. I am happy to write a letter supporting your need to attend regular appointments for you to give to your employer.

  • During the assessment process we will discuss what length of treatment is appropriate for you. We will review this at regular intervals to determine the need for any adjustment.

As a rough guide, CBT-E is typically 20 sessions for bulimia, BED, and BDD and 40 sessions for anorexia. However, treatment length depends on a lot of individual factors.

Longer-term therapy is also available if indicated, particularly where schema therapy is being used.

  • Either. I can see you face to face in my therapy room in Surbiton or online, depending on availability.

  • I am based in Surrey and offer face to face sessions in Surbiton.

  • Absolutely not. Therapy is about dealing with issues that are affecting your life and stopping you from living the way that you want to.

I offer sessions to people who need support, whether this is for a diagnosed eating disorder, an undiagonsed eating disorder, or difficulties with eating. In fact, early intervention (getting treatment before things get worse) can be a very positive step.
